The Hound of the Baskervilles (unabrigded)-The classic Victorian novel set in the moors of northern England in which Sherlock Holmes attempts to eradicate a family curse once and for all.
Robinson Crusoe (abridged)-Another classic that was based on the story of Alexander Selkirk, an irascile sailor who, after an argumnent with his captain, was marooned on an island.
Don Quixote- (abridged)-Both a comedy and a tragedy, Cervantes tells the story of a gentle but imbalanced knight errant whose escapades will keep students humored.
Walden-(unabridged)-An American classic, Walden is the story of one man's attempt to live "simply" and "deliberately" apart from society.
The Jungle-(abridged)-Upton Sinclair's muckraking novel provided the impetus for social reform in the nation's meatpacking industry in 1906.
Moby Dick (abridged)-Herman Melville's tale of the sea is filled with symbolism that students enjoy.
Writing
Students will be exposed to all writing styles. Writing prompts will be a regular routine this year as we prepare for CMTs. All examinations on books above include a writing component.
Mechanics of English The mechanics of the language, so vital for students when they attend high school and college, receive full treatment across the curriculum.
Poetry Students will compete in two poetry contests this year- one in November and one in January. Winners receive cash awards and will have their work published in the Anthology of Poetry out of Asheville, North Carolina.
The Career Unit This project is one of our most popular. Students will select a career and do the research on that career. Here students get to check out college catalogues for requirements that pertain to their chosen career. Writing and research are important components. |
