Philosophy:
The Captain Nathan Hale Middle School World Language Department believes that today’s increased global interdependence necessitates knowledge of other languages and cultures. Second language study becomes essential to all students’ programs of life preparation for the twenty first century.
We believe that studying World languages:
-enhances world perspective.
-complements many subject areas such as English and Social Studies
-clarifies and reinforces connections between one’s own culture and other world civilizations.
-deepens communications in social, diplomatic, and commercial milieus.
-develops personal resourcefulness and critical thinking skills.
-encourages personal growth, and enhances self-esteem.
Through a balance of a proficiency and achievement approach, the world language department fosters the acquisition of a foreign language as an invaluable life skill. Second language acquisition is a highly abstract course of study. To accommodate the diverse learning styles of middle school students, a variety of approaches will be implemented, including hands-on projects and written and oral dialogues. Key concepts in classroom activities stress active participation and appropriate responses, engaging both student and instructor. The student uses the language creatively from the outset, and participates in simulated, practical situations. The program is designed to build students’ confidence and skills, and to enable them not only to survive in real-life experiences but to grow towards becoming independent users of the target language.
