The National Honor Society (NHS) is the nation's premier organization established to recognize outstanding high school students. NHS strives to honor those students who have demonstrated excellence in the areas of Scholarship, Leadership, Service, and Character.
Admission to the Honor Society is an honor given to students. It is not a right and is not something which can be earned. It is intended to be an award to recognize the combination of outstanding scholarship, character, leadership, and service. In fact, by National norms, students are not allowed to apply for membership. They are not supposed to solicit or ambition membership. Neither students, faculty members, or parents are permitted to take the initiative by lobbying for the admission of a particular student. Those who qualify will be considered, and those elected will be "tapped" for membership. The ideal is that students study to learn, and do service to help others; it is a perversion of this ideal when students study for grades or do service to gain admission to the Honor Society.
