Geometry
Syllabus
Instructor: Mrs. Lillis (room 126)
Overview
This is a full year college-preparatory mathematics course in Euclidean Geometry. This course is often called the “literate math” because much of the course will involve writing and making logical arguments. Topics covered include parallel and perpendicular lines, congruent triangles, similarity, right-triangle trigonometry, circles, areas, volumes, and writing deductive proofs. Students learn a complete language of geometric terms and improve their inductive and deductive reasoning.
Academic Expectations:
In this course, students will be given an opportunity to develop mastery of the
following school-wide expectations for learning described in the CHS mission statement:
-To apply math skills in practical and theoretical situations
-To speak and listen effectively
Text and Materials:
- Textbook— Bass, Johnson, Hall and Wood, Geometry Tools for a Changing World Prentice Hall 2001.
- Notebook –a three ring binder of at least 1-½ inches is recommended since smaller binders will fill too quickly to be useful. See notebook requirements sheet for details.
- Scientific calculator or a graphing calculator
- Protractor
- Ruler with both centimeters and inches
- Pencil
Class Requirements:
Students are expected to come to class on time and prepared for class each day. You are to have the text and materials listed above in addition to a COMPLETED homework assignment. Homework reinforces class concepts and facilitates exam preparation. Expect to have a written homework assignment after each class. Homework must be turned in at the beginning of class on the day it is due. All class work and homework assignments are to be completed in pencil. Definitions, postulates and theorems may be copied in pen.
Tests will be announced ahead of time with ample opportunity to study and prepare. Quizzes may be announced or unannounced. Projects will be given out periodically throughout the year. Some class time will be given to work on projects, but it is expected that the majority of project work will be done outside of classroom time.
Grading Policy:
- Homework and class assignments: 30%
- Quizzes and Notebook checks: 30%
- Tests: 40%
Student grades are maintained on the Internet at www.mygradebook.com.
The Class word and your password will be provided to you.
Make-up Policy
- If you are absent, IT IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to make up the work that you missed including all notes, in class assignments and homework.
- You must get all make up work before or after school. All make up work is to be completed on your time not during class time.
- For each day absent, you are allowed one day plus an extra day to complete any assignments (i.e. if you are absent 3 days, you have 4 school days to make up all of the assignments).
- Absences must be kept to a minimum or you will jeopardize your grade and course credit.
Miscellaneous:
I encourage you to get additional help as soon as you begin to feel uncomfortable with what we are doing or with what I seem to expect the class to have grasped. Try to see me ahead of time so we can decide on a time and place that suits both of us.
Additionally, you may seek help from a classmate or tutor. Tutors can be arranged through Mrs. Lillis or the guidance department.
