I finished my undergraduate degree in Elementary Education at Eastern Connecticut in December, 1967 and started teaching fourth grade in January, 1968 in Tolland. After getting married that summer, we moved to Norwalk where I taught second grade for one year. We moved back to Tolland where I got a job teaching second grade. During the years there I got my Master’s degree at UCONN. After teaching ten years at the Parker School, I took ten years off to be with my two children.
I really missed teaching so when we thought our girls were old enough, I applied for a position in Coventry and resumed my teaching career at GHR, teaching second grade again. While in Coventry I taught first grade for a brief time at CGS then went back to GHR to teach a combination class of second and third graders. I also taught first grade at Robertson but eventually got back to my favorite grade - second.
I rejoined the CGS staff when the schools were reorganized and all K, 1 and 2 grades at Robertson were moved to CGS. I have been there ever since. Even after I retired in 2005, I couldn’t leave. Another teacher, Mrs. Hurlburt, was going to teach second grade part time and needed a partner. I applied and am happy to say that I was able to continue to do what I love by sharing a class with her. I go in at 12:15 and teach Math, Science and Social Studies. I have my mornings free to putter in my yard, do craft projects, work with my camera, correct papers, or make plans for school.
I love teaching second graders. They are becoming more independent and enjoy investigating new things but they’re not ready to give up their safety nets. They still respect and openly love the adults in their lives.
