Read Across America Day
Coventry Grammar School students joined thousand upon thousands of young students throughout the United States in celebrating Read Across America Day Monday, March 3. Read Across America Day, an annual literacy effort sponsored by the National Education Association, coincides with the March 2 birthday of Dr. Seuss (Springfield’s very own Theodor Seuss Geisel).
Colorful bulletin boards and posters adorned our school hallways, along with rhyming couplets written by our students in the manner of Dr. Seuss – “I can read in a house. I can read with a mouse.” “I can read in my jeep. I can read in my sleep.” And on and on!
Faculty, staff, and parent volunteers visited classrooms as guest readers. Board of Education chairman Larry Pietrantonio, Superintendent Donna Bernard, and several other “special” guests from the community joined us as well. Our students were also treated to a Reading Room RIF book distribution that put a new book in the hands of each and every student.
And, of course, the featured menu item for the day’s lunch was green eggs and ham!
